2010 will be slightly different at MOT International, in that under the umbrella of a one-year experiment, the gallery will dispense with conventional programming. It is intended that through this abandonment of traditional exhibition programming the gallery will be able to react to ideas from artists and curators almost immediately, with projects merging and usurping each other in a free-form reaction to current ideas edited by the director. This means that projects do not have to fit into traditional exhibition timescales, they can collide, interact and even cancel each other. The most interesting works supersede their successors. Works can come and go over the year.

Milan Grygar - Drawings and Sound - Foksal Gallery - Warszaw

The Milan Grygar exhibition at the Foksal Gallery is the first presentation of this artist's work to be held in Poland for many years. His previous show took place in 1974 at the Museum of Art in Łódź, when, at Ryszard Stanisławski's invitation, the spaces of the Łódź museum played host to both an exhibition of Grygar's works and a performance art work. This is by no means a chance reference to the 1974 exhibition. The show at the Foksal will focus primarily on a closer look at that period of the artist's work, namely, the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period deemed to be one of the most significant and most pioneering in Milan Grygar's artistic quest. The exhibition will be showing multimedia documentation of Grygar's most important actions from 1969, 1973 and 1982 and this will be supplemented by photographs of the events, as well as his Acoustic Drawings and Drawings/Ground-Plan Scores from that period.

Twentieth Century debates over the "politics of representation," the autonomy of art, or art's capacity for "critique" still linger like disgruntled spirits on the hunt for living bodies to inhabit. At first, contemporary art looks vaguely amenable to such interpretations: appropriated/pop imagery, collage, the monochrome, automaticism, the aleatory etc. are no less common now than they were when such ideas were a breath of fresh air. But seen through a contemporary lens, the meanings of these strategies are less certain, less overt, as though much contemporary art beckons to these anachronisms only to misdirect them. How better to display ambivalence for such battles than to invite them in only to step gently to the side, behaving, in the terminology of language acquisition, like a false friend?

Ici et Ailleurs - Here and Elsewhere. Study Group - London

The Free Cinema School presents a one off evening "study group" based around the seminal ideas and contemporary themes in Ici et Ailleurs: Here and Elsewhere (Godard & Mieville 1976). In 1970, Godard, along with Jean-Pierre Gorin and the Dziga Vertov Group, was commissioned by Al Fatah, the militant Palestinian group, to shoot a documentary. When the film was approximately two-thirds complete, production was halted since many of the Palestinians they had been filming had been killed. Years after the disintegration of the Dziga Vertov Group, Godard and his new collaborator Anne-Marie Mieville, whom he would work with through the 1990s, re-edited this footage into a cinematic essay exploring the failure of the original to address the reality of the images it presents.

Andy Warhol: The Last Decade - Brooklyn Museum of Art

The Swiss dealer Bruno Bischofberger commissioned a set of collaborations from three leading artists of the 1980s, each from a different generation. To begin, each artist was given a set of canvases, which were then circulated to the others so they could add their contributions. In this painting we see Warhol’s yellow, screenprinted flower in the center overpainted with Clemente’s faces, and finally a layer of Basquiat’s white screened designs, which give the painting its title.

Over a period of six months, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is presenting works from the Old Masters, 19th-Century and Classical Modernism Collections in dialogue with artworks from the Galerie der Gegenwart. All art has been contemporary, which takes its name from a neon piece by Maurizio Nannucci (1999), calls attention to the often forgotten fact that every artwork has at some point been contemporary. While ‘historical’ and ‘current’ works of art may be centuries apart in terms of their date of origin and their style, similarities often exist between them on a formal or thematic level. This serves to remind us that every work of art is an expression of human experience and an exploration of universal issues, and that the artists’ intentions are not as far removed from each other as is commonly assumed. The unusual juxtapositions of works in this exhibition take visitors on an artistic journey through time and encourage a different kind of comparative viewing.

RIBBONS! (The Shape of an Exhibition) is a temporary project which will occupy the park opposite Auto Italia during July and August. Lengths of shiny, coloured ribbon are tied from the branches of one tree to another to form long squiggles and zig zagging lines which curve in one direction and then another as they are caught by the breeze. As the first installment of a larger project titled The Shape of an Exhibition, this outdoor installation acts as a sketch of what is to come.

OFF THE WALL: pt. 1 - thirty performative actions - Whitney Museum of American Art

The first installation in a two-part exhibition, Off the Wall: Part 1—Thirty Performative Actions, focuses on actions using the body in live performance, in front of the camera, or in relation to a photographic or printed surface, or drawing. Each action displaces the site of the artwork from an object to the body, acting in relation to, or directly onto, the physical space of the gallery. The wall and floor become the stage for these actions: walking on the wall, slamming doors, slapping hands against the wall, gathering sawdust up from the studio floor, walking on a painting, striding and crawling around a small cylindrical space, writing or drawing on the wall and floor, or performing a striptease behind the transparent plane of Duchamp’s Large Glass. The exhibition also includes a number of works that reveal the underlying theatricality of the performative action and the ways in which artists stage the self in images that question conventions of identity, gender, and the body.

The Danish artist Henrik Plenge Jakobsen investigates how political, economic, and social structures affect our lives. For him, art and reality do not constitute separate areas that can be connected from time to time. Art represents rather one of those realities that make up our overall reality. Jakobsen has devised an exhibition for the Kunstverein that deals with the history of the computer manufacturer IBM. Different sculptural installations and graphics visualise stages from the history of the American company, which has restructured itself repeatedly in the course of time, as well as adapted its range of products and sales and marketing strategies to suit the respective prevailing conditions of the present.

Five video works by artist Saskia Olde Wolbers from the Goetz Collection will be presented in a complex projection arrangement. These aesthetically remarkable experimental films all follow the same basic pattern: a voice off narrates a story that is visualised in fictitious and predominantly organically formed, self-contained spaces. The scenes are atmospherically underpinned by psychedelic and natural sounds that echo the biomorphic forms. Slow camera movements draw the viewer into surreal worlds, mostly portrayed in monochrome, whereby word and image do not necessarily correspond.

Lara Schnitger - Damned Women - Modern Art

Lara Schnitger’s paintings and sculptures compile the signs and codes of pattern and textile, brought together in the expression and representation of figures and associations of desire. Her collaged elements bring themselves into a scene, each symbolising an attitude, position in society, and storytelling possibility. Schnitger’s materials and techniques co-opt craft processes that have latent gendered and domestic connotations. Her stitched, dyed, knitted and applied surfaces are stretched and dressed over constructed bodies that support their textile covering, in turn giving shape and lending form: be it the familiar shape of a painting, or an unexpectedly anthropomorphic free standing object. Composed of various dressed states, her paintings and sculptures allude to a state of seductive undress, revealing their own underlying structures.

Simon Preston Gallery is delighted to present ‘dull as I am, i hope to live by these lines’, an exhibition of works on paper by Hurvin Anderson, Nick Goss, Norbert Schwontkowski and Caragh Thuring. The show will open to the public on Thursday July 8 and run until Friday August 13, 2010.

Each of the artists in the show employ drawing to impress their sense of self-awareness through mark-making, that is either independent or complementary to their painting. The title of show, while hinting at the bucolic nature of the images, looks to underscore the importance of drawing in each of the artists practice.

Lehman Brothers art collection to be auctioned off

The Neuberger Berman and Lehman Brothers Corporate Art Collection is scheduled to be sold in September, pending bankruptcy court approval, the auction house said.

The collection, which Sotheby's says is valued at more than $10 million (£6.9 million), includes works by some of the leading artists of contemporary art, including Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince and Julie Mehretu.

Mathew Barney - Drawing Restraint - Schaulager - Basel

This year Schaulager is presenting Drawing Restraint by Matthew Barney. Drawing Restraint is a series of performances, numbering sixteen thus far, in which Matthew Barney leaves traces in an environment of self-induced physical and psychological restraints. Works emerging from these performances, such as sculptures, vitrines, drawings and videos, are juxtaposed in the Schaulager exhibition with works of art from the Northern Renaissance.
