Michael Krebber - Mauren Paley - London

Maureen Paley is pleased to announce a solo presentation of new work by Michael Krebber. This will be Krebber’s third exhibition at the gallery. For several decades Krebber has investigated painterly issues, but his praxis is far from the bravura and self-assurance that formalist painting has traditionally represented. Instead of attacking – with full force, so to speak – selected painterly issues, Krebber takes a far more subtle, careful approach where strategies like deferral, hesitation and even artistic failure are applied. Throughout his highly influential career Krebber has maintained a relatively limited production and has constantly avoided pigeonholing within a particular style or mode of production. His whole oeuvre takes the form of a long succession of digressions or evasive actions, where the lack of focus and stability may seem to be the only unifying criterion one can find.

MoMA PS1 presents Sergej Jensen, the first solo exhibition of the Berlin-based artist at a New York museum.

Jensen's poetic artworks provide a fresh approach to Minimalist painting. Employing a wide range of textiles, the artist uses additive and subtractive physical methods like bleaching, fraying, or sewing to stand in for the traditional gestures of pure painting. Through these processes, Jensen creates fragile and quiet abstractions that become contemplations of the history and reuse of his chosen materials, and conjure a network of visual and visceral associations from the stains, holes, cracks, and other traces of use that in turn become his primary pictorial elements.

Natalie Sutinen has moved on in her work with the immediate, magical object. In the exhibition In between sleep and sleep, works are shown from an ongoing study of time, where the artist discontinues a logical chronology on behalf of the irrational, and creates a room where time is movement.

Time becomes a wet slippery soap in the hand. Incomprehensible traces, memories and dreams are gathered in floating grey zones. In the images and artefacts there are remains of faded generations. Previous pleasures and gravities live on in a dark or light coloured hair, under closed eyes, in a wing or in a feather. Here we find reminders of destinies and persons who no longer are available to tell us the truth about the past. At the same time it is like you somehow know anyway.

Stuart Elliot - Seventeen Gallery - London

Multiple canvases, equally sized, are installed close together on the gallery walls. So close, in fact, that it is hard to experience one of them without the presence of another bleeding into the percept. This is a phenomenon of quite some significance. A salient, though by no means unique example of what we might call the ethics of painterly deflection running throughout this exhibition.

About deflection. In abstraction, this might be understood as a sort of moving away from the idea. Not showing the idea fully - and certainly not being it.

Gareth Cadwallader - Hannah Barry Gallery - London

This is the artist's second solo show and marks a radical departure from the small oil paintings he has produced for the last four years. Installed in the gallery are mural-sized photographic billboards - capturing idyllic figurative scenes reminiscent of French Impressionism - and two new abstract paintings. Wedged floor-to-roof is a monolithic canvas seven metres high. Mounted on the mechanism of an orbital sander a second painting vibrates loudly, shattering the leisurely summer atmosphere of the photographs.

Wilkinson Gallery is pleased to present new paintings by Phoebe Unwin. This exhibition encompasses Unwin’s curious approach to painting: at once a destabilisation of expectations of style and form, coupled with a stern and enthused focus on realising a subject in paint. She cares for a painting’s physical qualities of material and scale in a way a sculptor might. These paintings feel part of our world, rather than a window to somewhere else. Each is a new possibility, differing in mark, material, scale and subject, with no repeated motif. With these formal interests and challenges, it may seem a perversity that these are figurative paintings, however, it is how image relates to material that is fundamental to the work.

Anthropologists relate smiling to the baring of teeth. So in Enrico David’s work, there is an inextricable bond between hysteria and the terror of human existence. For his exhibition at VW, Enrico David has created a harrowing body of work that confronts physical decay, vulnerability, voyeurism, and shame. The artist’s latest paintings, drawings and sculptures are enigmatic representations of the human body, often distorted or fragmented to humorous and horrifying effect. The works draw on personal memories and private experiences informed by historical references from Art Deco and Wiener Werkstätte to Joseph Beuys. There is an element of theatricality to the exhibition, in which works are deliberately staged in dialogue with one another.

Brice Dellsperger - Refreshing Fassbinder, and Others - Team Gallery - NYC

For this exhibition Team will present two of Dellsperger’s films from his ongoing series Body Double, titled after the iconic post-modern thriller of the same name by Brian De Palma. The exhibition premieres Dellsperger’s most recent addition to his twenty-eight-part oeuvre, a rhythmic three-channel sequence after Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 1978 film In a Year with 13 Moons. Also on view is Body Double 22, after Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut (1999). The show will continue to examine Dellsperger’s longtime fascination with issues of the psychosexual in contemporary cinema.

What we call ‘progress’ doesn’t necessarily take the direction we expect. Sometimes, in an attempt to ‘modernize’, the march of society pulls the rug from beneath our feet.

In their two-man exhibition, Marcin Dudek and Ben Washington create parallel large-scale installations. Both artists pick up on the need to ‘push forward’, the need to dig or climb, but also the dangers of being swallowed up or lost in the clouds.

Berlin-based artist David Barbarino (b. 1980 in Frankfurt) returns to London for a survey of selected works from recent years after having completed his fine art degree at Central St. Martins in 2005. The artist has since been included in various museum group shows, such as The Real Thing curated by VVork at MU Eindhoven and Utopia Station curated by Molly Nesbit, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Rirkrit Tiravanija at Haus der Kunst, Munich. The exhibition MAGNIFICENT BUTCHER will be his first solo show in the UK. This double venue exhibition will give the opportunity to view the artists work in two of the most exciting art spaces Peckham has to offer.

A shuttle service between venues will be provided on the night of the private view, if you are visiting in the daytime, it is a 15min walk between the two venues.

‘The similarity of the pictorial structures to veils, plants or starry heavens, prompts the imagination like in science fiction – to a greater extent than a real veil or leaf would do. These are random resemblances. Yet, the basic impression of nature’s complexity is here equally in consequence of the molecular self-organization of matter. The basis for self-organizing processes in the natural world are physical and chemical laws, like the relatively weak intermolecular forces. Van der Waals forces, for instance, provide the right polarity of the electrically charged atoms and molecules. Cohesive and adhesive power of the liquids make the pathways, and pigment particles deposit or get dragged along like pebbles and sand in a riverbed.’ (Ulrike Heise).

Ghenie’s dense and tactile paintings with their complex structure offer a contemporary vision of major political narratives and such fundamental, universal topics as the abuse of power, exploitation and oppression, and also of a personal, individual human struggle. His critique is never direct, however, but always takes a roundabout route. Ghenie obscures all his historical and political references by fusing them with personal memories, film references, clichés from the entertainment industry and elements from art history. This gives rise to a continuous metamorphosis between fact and construction, a grid of fragmented stories on collective and individual catastrophes. Ghenie depicts a journey through the darkest realms of human existence, where a glimmer of hope nevertheless persists.

Paul Thek - Diver, A Retrospective - Whitney Museum - NYC

Paul Thek: Diver, a Retrospective is the first retrospective in the United States devoted to the legendary American artist Paul Thek (1933-1988). A sculptor, painter, and one of the first artists to create environments or installations, Thek came to recognition showing his sculpture in New York galleries in the 1960s. The first works exhibited, which he began making in 1964 and called “meat pieces” as they were meant to resemble flesh, were encased in Plexiglas boxes that recall Minimal sculptures. At the end of the sixties, Thek left for Europe, where he created extraordinary environments, incorporating elements from art, literature, theater, and religion, often employing fragile and ephemeral substances, including wax and latex.

Michael Sailstorfer - forst - Kestnergesellschaft - Hannover

Michael Sailstorfer (*1979, Velden/Vils), who studied at the Akademie der Künste in Munich and Goldsmiths College in London, is one of the most important representatives of recent German art. Through the artistic transformation of everyday objects and places he creates poetic images that deal with conditions from euphoria to decay. Absurd failure and tragicomedy play as important a role as the question of the space a sculpture is able to occupy: sometimes he even attacks our senses of hearing and smell. Sailstorfer's work operates within the tension between such concepts as home and the far away, mobility and standstill or light and darkness. Destruction and recombination are his basic compositional principles. Despite the vehemence of his artistic transformations, Sailstorfer's works always have a characteristic humor and background melancholy.

Julien Bismuth's second exhibition at The Box consists of three distinct new works. The first is a video, The Golden Ass, shot by the artist at the Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue in Tehachapi, California and at the Wild Burro Rescue in Olancha, California, both sanctuaries for the increasingly endangered feral donkey population. Rather than a documentation of these animals or their situation, the video is a sequence of discrete encounters with the animals and their caretakers, each shot the consequence of a simple gesture of placement of the camera
