Cyprien Gaillard - The Recovery of Discovery - KW - Berlin

March 27 – May 22, 2011

Opening: Saturday, March 26, 5 pm – 2 am

In his work, Cyprien Gaillard repeatedly explores the absurd aspects of dystopic architectures and their remaining ruins through such strategies as dilapidation, destruction, demolition, preservation, conservation and reconstruction of architecture. In doing so he always departs from the process itself. For his exhibition at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin Cyprien Gaillard has created a new, large-scale piece, which – whilst departing from a prototype of the monument – completes itself in the process.

Provisional Painting - groupshow - Stuart Shave/Modern Art - London

15 April – 21 May, 2011

Stuart Shave/Modern Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings curated by Raphael Rubinstein.

In his recent article ‘Provisional Painting’ (Art in America, May 2009), Raphael Rubinstein sought to identify and assemble a range of painting practices, historic and contemporary. In this exhibition the focus is exclusively on the contemporary, as the writer puts his critical ideals to the test with actual art works.

Albrecht Schnider - At the Event Horizon - Haus am Waldsee - Berlin

April 22nd to June 19th 2011

The show starts with a painting from 1997. In several, upright and iridescent forms, it hints at the topic of landscape which is then expounded in the main exhibition room overseeing the park in a total installation in front of tinted walls. The viewer is confronted with the ambiguity of painterly forms which, in Schnider‘s case, grow out of the line and develop a strong spatiality “at the event horizon” through mirror imaging, vacuity and plentitude as well as positive-negative effects. In the rooms on the upper level, intense dialogues are instigated between drawing, sculpture, sketch-books and painting.

Proteo - group show - Nettie Horn - London

through 1 MAY 2011

DEXTER DYMOKE, DAVID BESTUE & MARC VIVES, LIZI SANCHEZ

Through the mediums of sculpture, collage and performance video, the exhibition offers different approaches to the way metaphorical dialogues and other mental resonances question our conventions of behaviour and consciousness. Creators of unexpected logic, “free association” and other alternative juxtapositions, the artists in this exhibition emphasize the act of exploration in a number of artistic practices and interrogate the notions of limit, intensity and hierarchy between low and high culture.

through May 1st 2011

This exhibition, the first dedicated to Pino Pascali in the UK, focuses on works from 1967 and 1968, the years in which Pascali became associated with Arte Povera, the radical trend in Italian art where everyday materials were used in resonant combinations and in which events in art and life appeared to converge.

Cathy Wilkes - Solo Show - Kunstverein München

April 16th - June 26th 2011

The exhibition can be seen as a personal account in which the artist looks back on her oeuvre while adding two newly commissioned works to the selection. The sculptures of Cathy Wilkes are known to have an unusual fragility, by means of the appropriated artefacts and materials she incorporates within them, such as the breakfast plates of porridge she saves of her family. These elements are more comparable to personal sketches that are both anecdotal details and historic.

Kimberly Clark - Temporary Devotion - Künsterhaus Bethanien - Berlin

last chance through April 17th 2011

Kimberly Clark is a collective of Dutch artists whose videos, sculptures and installations often reveal a disturbing image of unbridled night-time pleasures that even cross the limits to excess. In static images or snapshots, the changing psychological states of modern man - ranging from euphoria to ennui and isolation to hysteria - are documented in a very direct way. Kimberly Clark's method is passionate and spontaneous, and mercilessly probes the wounds of post-modern man’s emotional poverty and failure to communicate. Their works frequently centre on a female figure, a symbol of the suffering yet always rebellious body that has to survive on the modern battlefield of our party society. The trio's rather gross and expressive language sometimes conjures the apocalyptic paintings of Hieronymus Bosch which show human beings cavorting on the edge of the world’s abyss.

Alice Channer - Body Conscious - The Approach - London

18th March – 24th April 2011

In Body Conscious, Alice Channer’s second solo show at The Approach, the focus of her work has moved away from the body of the room, to the human bodies it is in the room with. The body itself is never represented, instead, a conscious human body is everywhere that the work is not. The body that the works bring about is neither solid and central, or immediate and primal. Instead, it is mediated and extended by technology and commodified. Both of these factors explode and expand it, as well as contracting and concentrating it. The works consider the way in which the artists’ sensory apparatus - her tools as an artist - are mediated by consumption and technology.

Hesam Rahmanian - Till the End of Dawn - Paradise Row - London

through May 7th 2011

In his first solo show in Europe, Iranian artist Hesam Rahmanian presents a body of paintings that, in the main, respond with a mordant and mournful wit to the repression and violence inflicted by the current theocratic regime in Iran on the country and its people. Since the beginning of the year, however, Rahmanian has broadened his scope to include the uprisings and revolutions that have sprung up throughout the Middle East, collectively described in the media as the 'Arab spring'.

Janice Kerbel - Kill the Workers - Chisenhale Gallery - London

through May 15th 2011

Following the conventions and mechanics of stage lighting and dramatic genres and forms, Kerbel has written a cue script for lights in the vein of a mythic odyssey. Desiring to be seen as light itself, rather than as light serving to illuminate form, a single ‘spotlight’ becomes the key protagonist on an epic journey of conflict and transformation to become one with the ‘worker’ lights, and to realise his dream of ‘open white’.

New Shadow Old Legs - groupshow - Eleven Rivington - NYC

Eleven Rivington is pleased to present a group exhibition that presents five contemporary artists in conversation with works by the American artist Alan Shields (1944 - 2005). In handmade works of dyed, painted, cut, and sewn fabric; woven textiles; embroidery; and paper, the show suggests a dialogue between an emerging generation of artists and the late post-minimalist's use of unconventional materials and chromatically charged and modulated surfaces.

Alice Channer, Jamie Isenstein, J. Parker Valentine - Lisa Cooley - NYC

Alice Channer, Jamie Isenstein, J. Parker Valentine

April 1 - May 1, 2011

The three artists in this exhibition are united by what is missing in their work: the body and its physical memory. Each artist renders this absence in a range of tones, from poetically solemn to surreally comic. In some instances the body is removed or substituted, while in others it is suggested as the elusive site of memory and sensation. Additionally, the artists deftly transpose sculpture with a given formal practice – textiles, performance art, and drawing, respectively. They each present sculpture that locates itself partially beyond the materials of its apparent constitution and perception. While the exhibition is unified by what is absent, what is materially present creates a lush yet subtle dissonance.

Gary Hill - of surf, death, tropes & tableaux: The Psychedelic Gedankenexperiment - Barbara Gladstone - NYC

through April 23, 2011

Gladstone Gallery is pleased to announce our fifth exhibition with Gary Hill. Long known for his unique combination of video, sound, performance and installation, Hill has continuously offered multilayered investigations into the phenomenological nature of how we perceive the world through a network of visual, aural and linguistic signals. Exploring the cognitive and sensorial conditions that underlie our discursive modes of communication, Hill experiments with the material and sonic properties of language to offer provocative meditations upon the production of meaning within our everyday contexts.
