Trisha Baga - World Peace - Kunstverein München - Munich

through June 17th 2012
A logical consequence of today’s proliferation of mass media is that the intrinsic value of the cultural experience is easily replaced by the transient satisfaction of ownership. In this vein a universal concept such as “World Peace” could recently be utilized as a backdrop for pop star Madonna, appearing on a giant media landscape of monitors surrounding her stage.

Michiel Ceulers - Comment Tuer l’Amant De Sa Femme Quand On A Été Élevé Comme Moi Dans La Tradition - Mihai Nicodim - LA

through June 25th 2012

He strips the medium right down to its skeleton, peeling away all the unnecessary accouterments laden on poor painting by thousands of years to find out as best he can what the act can presently and personally mean. He endeavors to renovate the ancient practice with works wearing proudly their labors, sometimes singly and sometimes coupled together in handsome pairs. A rapid rigor reveals itself, unwinding through stripes and grids leaving the paintings at the end of the process curiously tender and refreshingly human.

Hans Schabus - Let´s Call it Heimat - Simon Preston Gallery - NYC

through June 15th 2012

Hans Schabus is known for his ambitious, radical gestures to deconstruct and restructure space. The studio often appears as the matrix of his work, a place of conflict, where life and thinking are transformed into sculptural space and material. Simultaneously fertile and challenging, the intimacy of this space is referred to in the show's title. 'Heimat' is a German word with no direct English translation. It denotes the relationship of a person towards a certain spatial social unit. People are bound to their 'heimat' by their birth and childhood. It is fundamental to the formation of a person's identity.

Nicholas Deshayes - Browns in Full Color - Jonathan Viner Gallery - London

through June 9th 2012

Jonathan Viner is pleased to present Browns in Full Colour, an exhibition of new works by Nicolas Deshayes. Running intermittently along the tiled wall of the upstairs gallery is a series of five large polystyrene blocks fixed to mustard-coloured poles. The carved, rippled texture of Soho Fats (2012) refers to the filthy interior lining of a sewer pipe. Made from the same polystyrene material that often constitutes the most persistent debris, the panels appear deceptively solid: what seems heavy and dense is actually soft and fragile. While the circumference of the supporting poles would be familiar to any hand that has reached for balance on the London Underground, the rippled surfaces of the polystyrene look like the layers of congealed refuse that drip from the surfaces of another subterranean environment, the sewer systems further underground. The finish of the panels is the result of a manual process, though it appears surprisingly like a generic, digitally generated topography.

Bianca Brunner - Dawn Has Broken - Bolte Lang - Zurich

last chance: through May 19th 2012

A triptych in the gallery office is equally entitled Sun; yellow yarn captures and radiates light in three shining blasts. Not for the first time, the eye cannot fix upon the artist’s subject with certainty, but is baffled by contradictory signals of surface anddepth. This reflective effect is repeated in the triptych Towards Tomorrow, whose forms are made in thread lines and black ink to create images that progress like a moving camera shutter or a rising and setting sun.

Tom Holmes - Part of This Complete Breakfast : Objects for a Wake - Galerie Catherine Bastide - Brussels

last chance: through May 17th 2012

In keeping with his last two solo shows in New York, Holmes presents several new large woks exhibiting a continued interest in the genre of funerary objects. Here the gallery is transformed, the space primed for a secularized ritual, in this case the ancient ritual of a wake. Far less attached to the primary function of the funerary object than in previous work, like a gravestone, urn or, shroud, these new works abstract from simple pop structures. Using folding chairs, chip bags, children's cereal boxes, and advertising signs for soda the ready made object becomes the cultural armature, a structure on which the abstracted gesture hangs.

Thomas Zipp - BLACKOUT CHAMBERS, L´ARC DE CERCLE & DISSOCIATIVE AMNESIA - Guido W Baudach - Berlin

through June 9th 2012

Numerous large-format paintings with plant motifs stand in a dialogue with the diverse sculptural elements of the exhibition. Thepaintings and the tree sculptures are associated with drawings and collages of apples. The apple, which detaches itself from the treeas a fruit, appears as an allegory of that isolation which every human being experiences in reality, both corporeally and consciously. The apple is a symbol for the loss of the paradisiacal state, of totalizing harmony, resulting from the desire for knowledge. As such, itstands both for the origins of human responsibility and for the inextricably related, fundamental experience of rupture between egosubjectand environment.

Bryn Lloyd-Evans, John Nielsen, Jonathan Trayte - Josh Lilley Gallery - London

through May 18th

2012 An anthropomorphic entity creeps across the objects on display, yet they are also anthropological in their designs;  the notion that the works are somehow reflective of their expected audience or surroundings, becoming overtly self-conscious in the process.  The various sculptures have been given a life-force that they are now responsible for – enabling them but also tilting them towards narcissism.  With this is mind, while Lloyd-Evans’ works are elastic and revealing, Nielsen’s conceptually “dug up” and static, and Trayte’s seemingly frozen and confined, they all present diverse relationships (whether directly or indirectly) – towards human consciousness, form or the body.

James Clarkson - A Painted Sun as a Yellow Spot - Rod Barton Gallery - London

through June 16th 2012

Exploring the relationships between art and the history of design, James Clarkson's practice investigates how a formal language can be devised from combining found objects, painting and sculpture. The materials Clarkson uses in his works are typically selected for the references they make to specific moments in art history. In addressing the tensions between functionality, purpose and experience, his work also asks wider questions regarding the meanings embedded in the objects that we surround ourselves with. For his solo exhibition at Rod Barton Gallery, 'A Painted Sun as a Yellow Spot,' Sheffield based artist James Clarkson has created an installation of new works that extend his exploration into art history and it's place in the materials of our present.

Joe Bradley - Pigpen - Galerie Eva Presenhuber - Zürich

through May 25th 2012

Bradley works in series, an approach that allows him to pursue ideas in painting and then drop them once they cease to interest him. In this way, the artist creates groups of works that over the years, offers a surprising diversity, but always retaining an unmistakable familiarity.

Michael DeLucia - 11 Rivington - NYC

through June 2nd 2012

Michael DeLucia begins his sculptural works in a 3d modeling workspace behind a computer screen. He then outputs his work in wood by cutting them with a computer-controlled router. The depth of carved line accommodates not only the dimensionality of the subject but that of the wood itself, engaging the illusory depth of the virtual object, the physical depth of the flattened image in relief, and the depth of the readymade material in space.

Gereon Krebber - Somatös - Galerie Christian Lethert - Cologne

through May 26th 2012

Somatös is a word formation that mixes the idea of the somatic (physiological) and comatose. This state of uncertainty is the basic idea of the exhibition: inscrutable material, form, surface and appearance. For the Greek natural philosophers, similar to the hylozoists of the 17th century, life was a quality of matter itself. The world is soaked with life and obviously dead appearing things can be alive. Immanuel Kant judged: „The hylozoism inspirits everything, the materialism however kills everything.” Krebber talks about his sculptures as the „un-dead“ that seem to get out of control make us look like the sorcerer’s apprentice.

Alessandro Roma - The Sun Forced Me To Abandon The Garden - Brand New Gallery - Milan

through

In his work Alessandro Roma renders the double form of the landscape and the garden, completeness and fragment, of a defined space that safeguards within itself elements of attraction, yet which are not immediately assimilable. The paintings live in equilibrium between figuration and abstraction; the sculptures render anthropomorphic forms and the memory of atavistic containers of natural elements at the same time, while the collages are configured as sketches tracing surreal visions.

Jean-Luc Moulène - Fénautrigues - Galerie Chantal Crousel - Paris

through June 16th 2012

Jean-Luc Moulène’s latest exhibition at Galerie Chantal Crousel offers a selection of photographs of the landscapes of Fénautrigues, a small village in the department of Lot and the cradle of the artist’s family. During fifteen years between 1991 and 2006, as seasons went by, Jean-Luc Moulène paced up and down the tracks of this small territory of 5 km2. Gardens, brooks, woods, countryroads, as well as field labour and everyday life, provided for more than 7000 shots. From this archival undertaking, Jean-Luc Moulène has extracted some fifteen photographs, which constitute an aesthetic and analytical inventory of the landscape.

Liam Gillick - Scorpion And Und Et Felix - Casey Kaplan - NYC

through June 23rd 2012

Incomplete, and therefore only open to a partial reading or misunderstanding, the novel is an entryway into Liam Gillick’s exhibition and practice; its final point also open to interpretation as a self-deprecating, comedic reflection on the archetypal struggles of all artists, writers, filmmakers, poets, and others. Gillick’s practice is a divergent one (including sculpture, writing, architectural and graphic design, film, and music) that resists methodological boundaries and constraints, and shows a fondness for discursiveness, distractions, and evasive tactics.

Trisha Baga - Rock - Vilma Gold - London

through May 19th 2012

Baga is a young artist working mainly in video and performance. In terms of technology, plot and resources however, her approach to making is inclusive, playful and highly improvisational, so that her practice begins to unfix such distinctions. Though precarious by its nature, this tack also thrives on the possibility that arises when everything around becomes potential material for narrative making.
