Karen Kilimnik & Kim Gordon - 303 Gallery - NYC

through September 29th 2012

For this show, both Kilimnik and Gordon will present video installations addressing the nature of performance, its definition and its influence. Kilimnik's 'Bananarama Guilty' considers performance from the vantage point of the spectator, and the dialogue that is created through worldwide broadcast. Using material recorded from a televised concert and interview with the band Bananarama in Monaco, the bad reception causes the video to appear as almost complete static, a blown out cacophony of black and white snow, amplifying the distance between performer and spectator. Through this abstracted fissure, ghosted pop choreography is discernible, the music and band rising from the abyss like the title character in Poe's "Liegeia." As soon as a fleeting grasp of the material begins to emerge, the video abruptly cuts to more legible footage of Madonna's Hollywood star-turn "Desperately Seeking Susan" and early '90s MTV fashion weekly "House of Style." As the video cuts back to Bananarama, the lyrics to the song appear- "'Cause I'm guilty - guilty - guilty as a girl can be... only youuu can set me free."

Bernadette Corporation - 2000 Wasted Years - Artists Space - NYC

through December 16th 2012

Since the early days of Bernadette Corporation there was always the desire to make films, and the group began to use the context of contemporary art for production assistance and screening opportunities, culminating in one of BC’s most widely seen videos: Get Rid of Yourself (2003). The film revolves around the rioting in Genoa during the 2001 G8 summit and the militant-intellectual mood of radical Black Bloc anarchists, in opposition to peacenik anti-globalization protest organizations and the police. The video opted for seductive contagion by circulating modes of protest along with scripted passages featuring downtown actress and fashion icon Chloë Sevigny.

Simon Starling - Triangulation Station A - Casey Kaplan - NYC

through October 20th 2012

Casey Kaplan is pleased to announce Triangulation Station A (40°44’49.17“ N 74°0’22.45“ W), an exhibition by Simon Starling (b. 1967) that draws on two distinct historical narratives. The exhibition, which is Starling’s fifth with the gallery, is based on the idea of the parallax view and runs concurrently with Triangulation Station B (52°31’39.61″ N 13°23’38.64″ E), a presentation of the same works at neugerriemschneider, Berlin. Central to both exhibitions are two films presented separately, each in relation to a sculpture that reinforces the sense of mirroring and triangulation at the heart of their structure. Both films are set within the confines of a small working space in which a craftsman is hard at work, and investigate the relationship between the meaning of making and the making of meaning.

Domino Effect - group show - Catherine Bastide - Brussels

through October 27th 2012

The Galerie Catherine Bastide is pleased to present a collective exhibition : Domino Effect with Florian Auer, Leo Gabin, Yngve Holen, Renaud Jerez, Ilja Karilampi, Sean Raspet, and John Sparagana.Domino Effect chose to reverse the principle of causality by leading the return of the effects back to its cause. It puts forward the idea of collage through an endless play of action/interaction between the sensitive formal imbrications and a reading mode that compromises standard logic. The image is at the centre of this exhibition: the online, digital, duplicated, multiplied, cut, infinitely modifiable image. As many images as there are realisation protocols. The interfaces are familiar within our contemporary experience: advertising, marketing, internet, industry, cinema, banking system. The input devices such as the keyboard, mouse, camera, microphone, or scanner are used to provide information to the machine. The output devices such as the display, LEDs, speakers, or printer allow the machine to respond and show information. The devices are large and the arrangements are manifold.Domino Effect questions proliferation and tries to establish new links between the strategies of mass media and the glossy surfaces of products, an investigation that positions itself between reality and hyper-reality.

MATT CONNORS - SANDPAPER SLEEVE - Cherry&Martin - LA

through October 27th 2012

Matt Connors’ open-ended approach to art-making embraces movement, change and meaning. Touching and jostling, his paintings and objects are intellectual and emotional, literal and metaphorical; they give a sense of themselves as being both pictures and things. Many of Connors’ works invoke physical methods like dripping, rubbing and staining. Museum of Modern Art curator Peter Eeley writes that Connors’ paintings are “remarkable for the apparent thinness of their surface; paint ends up in them, rather than on them.”

Natascha Sadr Haghighian - Carol/Fletcher - London

through September 22nd 2012

In a radical departure from her usual practice of site-specific projects, Natascha Sadr Haghighian's first solo exhibition in London is a selection of works from the last fifteen years. She describes her practice as a continual process of interrogation and unhinging of socio-political hierarchies and conventions; of seeking to defrock and destabilise systems of representation and authority. By placing the works alongside each other for the first time, Sadr Haghighian draws out new perspectives and connects the various debates and questions raised by them over the years.

From The Age of the Poets - group show - Aanant & Zoo - Berlin

through October 20th 2012

The functioning of language, its limits and possibilities, has kept especially philosophers and poets, Dadaists and semiotic theorists busy in the last century. The gallery Aanant & Zoo dedicates the exhibition From the Age of the Poets to the interplay between the wonder of language, truth, the possibility of mis- or not understanding and poetry as a legitimate access to the world. Twenty-five well-known and lesser-known positions of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries create a room, in which these questions can oscillate. A central topic of the exhibition is translation. Many artists share the possible translatability from language to language, from system to system, from the concrete to the abstract and occasionally backwards.

Roman Liška - NU BALANCE - Rod Barton Gallery - London

through October 20th 2012

Private View: Thursday, 13th of September / 6 - 9 PM

Now that we are witnessing the failure of the neoliberal austerity drive, we can begin to understand Contemporary Art as a limited art historical period that may prove inappropriate for the next phase of globalisation, with massive histories still to be written between the world’s multiple new, non-Western, non-liberal economic powers. Indeed we may look back on 2012 as the year that neoliberalism came to an end. And it is the end of this world order’s ‘Contemporary’ configuration of art that is played out in the work of German-born, London-based artist Roman Liška.

Matt Hope - Spectrum Divide - Saamlung - Hong Kong
